I've reached the max limit that my laptop holds for RAM. It only holds 384 (a 2001 laptop). What else can I do to make my computer run more smoothly. When i first got it, it had Windows ME but I updated to XP a couple months ago. Is there anything else i can do to make my computer run smoothly and fast?

RAM and CPU are the most important for XP - if you've maxed out the RAM, than you probably can't do much else hardware wise - the CPU is not upgradable. You could consider replacing the hard drive with a faster 7200 RPM model... but then you'd have to reinstall Windows.

If you use Norton, REMOVE IT and buy something else - norton is well known for slowing systems down.

You can also review the Black Viper services page and possibly disable a few services you don't need:

Nothing other than replacing the mobo with a brand new architecheture.

Best way is to use the many software utilities to make WinXP work better. Because you upgraded, you have basicially parts of 2 OS's on one HDD. That will hinder your system performance. XP needs and wants ALL of the system resources it can get -doesn't like to share.

1. I'm pretty sure u'r making a mistake, read manual again or post make/model
if it can take 384 mb, it sure can take 512 mb
the 2 slots are made for equal pairs
256 + 128 sounds odd ... plz check ... sure 256 + 256 should be ok

2. win me is pretty lean on system requirements, whereas win xp is resource hungry., but natural u'r system will slow down
if it's ok with 256 + 256 mb then run xp, else i suggest revert back to win me

it sounds like you are making a mistake on the ram. Most machines will go to at least a GB. I've never heard of a machine with 384 memory. Many SODIMM go to a gb. Please post type of machine you have.

nope....sorry, if youve put in all the ram, that means that you need a new computer, you could always disable startup programs, but thats prolonging the inevitible.....pretty much once vista comes out, that thing is gonna be in the trash
