My son is 11 months old and has never had tears when he cries. Our ped just sent us to and eye doctor that said it is really rare, but some people do not produce tears when they cry. Anyone heard of this? It is permenant? He does not have a blocked tear duct, his eyes look normal- no reddness or swelling. Does this condition have a name?

Here's some info on blocked tear ducts; I'm not sure if that's what it could be since blocked tear ducts are actually quite common in babies. Maybe not for that age though; it usually affects newborns:

Sorry, you did say it wasn't. Hopefully they can find the cause for you. Good luck.

You can try researching this: "This disease is called Dry Eye Syndrome or Sjogren's Syndrome...Sjorgen's Syndrome--Also called Dry Eye Syndrome is caused when the tear glands are damaged and produce an inadequate amount of tears. This also affects saliva glands."

I forget all the details, but I have heard of this. It DOES have a name. And your son CAN live with it. Just might need to always carry eye drops with him. Wish I could remember the info for you or remember more. Your baby will be fine. Best wishes.

my boyfriend had this problem and had to get his tear ducts cut (like they poked a hole where they were supposed to be...some small form of surgery i guess?)
