Yep! It's the badger. It started in the U.S. in the mid18th century with German immigrants. "Other Europeans used the bear or hedgehog -- but in any case it belonged to a creature that hibernated."

From that list I would have to say the woodchuck being it is a relative of the groundhog.

However, like above, I was taught that when you saw a robin it meant spring was here.
