Yep! It's the badger. It started in the U.S. in the mid18th century with German immigrants. "Other Europeans used the bear or hedgehog -- but in any case it belonged to a creature that hibernated."

From that list I would have to say the woodchuck being it is a relative of the groundhog.
However, like above, I was taught that when you saw a robin it meant spring was here.

Before the groundhog, people used the position of the sun, the behavior of birds, and other animals and the apearence of catipillars to predict seasons and other weather patterns.
