Smoke absorbs moisture. Our eyes have a film of moisture that prevents dryness. When smoke comes in contact with our eyes, the moisture "goes up in smoke". Then we have dry eyes.

Well there's most likely a chemical inbalance of some sort but also smoke is so dry it would irritate the eyes.

if i am not mistaken the reason that your eyes get irritated when you get smoke in them is because smoke although extremely small is still a measurable unit somewhere in the 10 micron range which is less then the thickness of a hair on your head and enough smoke particles getting into your eyes is just like getting sand in your eyes

Our eyes are very delicate and will be irritated by any irritant including onions. It is chemcial and allergic reaction
