Barry Goldwater was the forefather of modern day conservatism. His ideas were embraced by Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush (to an extent). Goldwater described conservatism as a three legged stool in his book "Conscience of a Conservative" written in the 1960's. The three legs then were:
1. Low taxes (it's your money not the governments)
2. Smaller federal government (decisions are best made at the local level)
3. Anti-communism (the Soviet Union was the major military and economic threat of the time)
Today conservatives believe in the same things. You could replace anti-communism with a support of a strong defense and the fight against radical forms of Islam.

It doesn't seem to stand for conservative does it? I think any truly conservative conservatives must be bound and gagged in a warehouse somewhere.

there's a big difference in conservative, and what you're describing, which is republican. I'm conservative and don't agree with the way that Bush has taken us.
