I have 5-x-x^2-2 which is simplified to 3-x-x^2

Is this wrong?

no. it isn't wrong

It should be 5 - x - x^2 + 2 or 7 - x - x^2

When you do a subtraction like this it's always a good idea to put the second expression in parentheses. Then you'll remember that there will be sign changes.

5 - x - (x^2 - 2)
