It's actually the Greek word transliterated synthesis, which is a putting together. It's something made by putting together something else. Over time, the word came to mean something that was created by man, versus something which occurs naturally.

However, the lanthanide and actinide series of elements are not synthetic. These 'rare earth' elements do occur in nature, though not commonly. Most of the elements beyond Uranium are considered synthetic. When they do occur, they are so unstable that they decay almost immediately.

Synthetic means not naturally occuring so man made. All elements above #92 are man made as well as promethium.
