i have a 90 lx 5.0... a few years ago i put a chip in mine too, it caused wacky Intake Air Temp readings to be sent to the computer telling it that the temperature outside was really cold causing the computer to dump fuel into the motor... i know that is what the chip does is change readings that the computer receives but for some reason it effects them in a negative way. so i removed the chip and the car ran a million times better. the chip did work for a couple months but then fouled up. you may be running into a similar situation but it is hard to say. i now have done many mods to my car and run it off the stock computer. with stock heads i am pushing 350 horse. i don't believe the chips for these cars do much good. maybe i just got a bad one ... who knows?? if you changed the octane bar in the distributor make sure you followed the instructions very carefully. as that will mess things up if its wrong. if you change the timing i ran about 18 degrees base timing and had no detonation. but as far as rich goes i would try it without the chip first, if no change you may want to check the MAP sensor as that plays a big role in fuel mixture.. hope this helps some.

you bought a element for mustangs I carry together. Me too, I even have owned 3, a sixty 8,sixty 9 and 70. The sixty 9 replaced into the worst one, then the 70. The sixty 8 replaced into the excellent one. The sixty seven-sixty 8 is the 2d era Mustang. Too me those have been the excellent looking and superb designed of all Mustangs. The sixty 9 & 70 is the third era and that they seem to be a step down from the sixty 8. the reason being Weight. The sixty 9 and 70 have 4 headlights, heavy doorways and generally engines that have been too huge. The door hinges at the instant are not stable sufficient to assist the load of the door. subsequently the door sags down whilst its open. Ford only mucked up the Mustang after sixty 8 in my opinion. you would be very silly to purchase this motor vehicle exceedingly with that style of mileage. additionally bear in recommendations, automobiles of that era at the instant are not almost as properly made as they are on the instant. they don't safeguard almost as properly. and that they wern't designed with gas financial equipment in recommendations. hear on your Grandpa. in case you desire and previous Mustang as a restore undertaking, get a 6 cylinder sixty 5 to sixty 8. Get the two a convertable with a potential suitable or a fastback. Notchbacks are ok yet do not look everywhere as sharp using fact the different 2. Thats my opinion besides.

There is a timing connector either near the distributor or near the firewall. You should check the decal under the hood for specific details. You need a timing light for this .
By the way S.E.F.I .stands for sequential electronic fuel injection. Most likely it's not been "chipped" just been fooled with. Have the oxygen sensors checked.

Could be a small vacuum leak somewhere maybe even on the o-rings at the injectors!! But check the timing out first make sure to bump it up a little bit and then check for the vacuum leak!! Good luck!
