You can try MUDs. That would come the closest to being a complete online, free MMORPG game. The only downside is that they are text based, NO graphic whatsoever.

If you prefer 3d gaming worlds, there’s a neat title for the PC called Mount & Blade. It’s a medieval themed game that has dozens of player made mods available. The trial is free, offers the entire game with a level cap of 6. Paying the $18 gets you free from the level cap. Only downside is that it’s not online; local machine only.

You can try beta testing sites that allow you to sign up as a beta tester for future games. These can be fun to try but be aware that once the game goes live, you will loses everything you’ve played for and then have to pay to play. There is also generally a waiting period involved for testing the games.

You can play Runescape for free but you won't get to go everywhere or reach all levels.
