Well, it depends on if you are going to take oc your purse or not. I got a Louise Vuitton bag for Christmas 3 years ago, but it never occured to me how expensive it was so I just threw it around like it was something from Walmart.... and it only lasted like 9 months or something.
But I got a new one 2 years ago after I realized how much it was and I still have it, and it is in good condition. They are kind of expensive, but it's worth it as long as you are going to take care of it.

Most high end handbangs are made from quality leather/materials (they have a very aromatic smell). And, they usually come with their own dust bags to insure the life of the bag and protect from the elements during storage. Like Kaye T said, investing in a high end, neutral (beige or off white) rectangular handbag is an excellent investment. I have a Michael Kors handbag and a Lulu Guiness evening bag and both have been worth every penny. Also. try to get something with at least an 8" shoulder drop, so, you can wear it on your shoulder or on your arm.
Invest in one, you'll never regret it!

Best rule of thumb is you get what you pay for. The more costly brands usually last longer. I have a leather Dooney I bought a year ago and it still looks brand new. I got on the Dooney mailing list and they sent me coupons. I got $50 off my purse.

I like Fossil purses. Pretty good quality but won't break the bank.

Slightly higher quality, and a classic color and shape.
Try a tan banana bag in real leather. Classic and still cute.
