yah they built it
they made tons of money
trucks came along
and they don't make nearly as much money anymore

well they used good routes to link major economic centers together for the movement of goods and people, while getting cheap land where posible, and making the most "accessable route"

yah they linked on mainlines and spurlines to ease the movement of goods to get customers, and of course develope local infastructures by providing goods and mateials a route to market with near monopoly.
