Often if it is a formal occasion, it will be stated as such on the invitation. In the past couple decades, weddings have become more and more casual. Usually there is a mix of styles depending on the folks attending.
Basic rules of thumb: If it is in a church dress like you were going to a regular service. Classic is always in and a nice business suit, is appropriate for almost anything. Quality is also an important point.
Avoid frilly things, especially in white.
Most importantly, wear something you are comfortable in and feel good about wearing, this always shows.

Firstly weddings are always formal but you cannot go wrong with a knee length dress. Also it depends on the hour. Is it afternoon or evening? Evening is always more formal and your date should wear a tie vs no tie. I personally would never wear a long dress unless going to the White House or something (as if). Don't wear white....try a nice teal or coral....black only if evening and very fancy. You can always dress a casual dress up with accessories. Being fall only means don't wear something you are going to freeze in. I would stick with something bright and avoid pastels though but would find something that flatters your skin tone. You can always find something at Ross, TJ Maxx or Marshalls if on a Budget :)

You should contact a family member of the wedding to see if they have a dress code. Some are formal which means to dress up and some are causal which means nice slacks will do.

I would wear whatever I wanted. Probably blue because that is an okay color for anything and i would do to right below the knee or right above.
