Most likely, they are tadpoles. I'm not sure where you live, but its possible for frogs and toads to breed in late summer or early fall if there are a number of cool days followed by a warm-up. They get confused and think its spring, I guess. We have a pond in the back yard and I heard a male toad "singing" calling for a female toad, just a few weeks ago - when our weather went crazy for a few days. Oh - they probably won't live too long in that bucket without food. If they really are tadpoles (still could be mosquito larvae!), you may want to let them go in a near-by pond.

Very unlikely to be tadpoles, frogs generally only lay in the pool they were hatched in plus its the wrong time of year for tadpoles.
Far more likely to be mosquito larvae, and pretty soon you will have a house full of mosquitoes!
Although there are other insects etc that breed in still water, if it were my bucket I would empty it!!

No, they are not tadpoles.
I know the things you mean. They live in peaty soil normally, they are likely to have been washed in my rain water or dropped by a bird. They wriggle about all the time.
Sorry, i wish I could name them for you, if you don't get a name email me, Our pond man is coming around next week and he knows what they are. We had a new pond dug this year and it was teaming with them.
I'd be suprised if they were Mostquitos. We've got millions of those things in our pond but we never had any mosquitoes. And i mean millions, the pond is 70 foot across and full of the blighters. THey arrived within days of the pond being dug so must have come out of the soil.
The pond man did tell us what theywere and i would have remembered if he said mossies

I am SO glad you asked this question! I've seen little things like mini tadpoles swimming around in the buckets I use to catch rainwater. Now I can see that I've been operating a mosquito farm! It's off to the hardware store for some screening - that should keep the mommies from getting in, and the hatchlings from getting out. Thanks y'all!

It sounds like mosquito larve - this website has a couple of pictures you could look at to see if they are the same. The standing water is definitely a place where they breed/grow. Dump that bucket before they have time to come out and bite you!!! :) Good luck! Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

They probably are tadpoles. Frogs will deposit egg clusters in still water--and while the cigarettes are not the best environment, they really are just burned, decomposing leaves. If it were me, I would try to find some standing water and relocate them; or, add rainwater to your bucket (chlorinated water WILL be toxic) and see what happens!
