The saddest song I know is "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor. Of course, that's probably because I associate it with a friend from college who died. The chorus is:
"I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again."
A close second is "All By Myself" by Eric Carmen. The lyrics are sad enough, but the sound is so melancholy I cry every time I hear it.
All By Myself
(Eric Carmen)
When I was young
I never needed anyone
And makin' love was just for fun
Those days are gone
Livin' alone
I think of all the friends I've known
But when I dial the telephone
Nobody's home
All by myself
Don't wanna be
All by myself anymore
All by myself
Don't wanna live
All by myself anymore
Hard to be sure
Some times I feel so insecure
And love so distant and obscure
Remains the cure
All by myself
Don't wanna be
All by myself anymore
All by myself
Don't wanna live
All by myself anymore
