I always thought of Che as a hero whose cause was to liberate Cuba from Batista corrupt dictatorship. However, when I met my Cuban boyfriend he told me about all the travesty commited by Che in Cuba. He told about all the psychological toture and mass executions ordered by him. Why have I never heard of these assasinations before?

I don't know if that is true about Che. However, you have to remember that in those days there was a war. People would torture others to information if they thought that the information could help their cause, or detract from the cause...eg if they thought the person was a traitor. So yeah it's quite possible that Che was a part of things like that.

Also, the torture and murders would not happen only on the side of the Cuban revolutionaries. It would happen on the other side too.

Speaking of things that you don't know, did you know that Batista was supported by the American government? And that it was only when he stopped being a 'puppet' president that the American government supported the revolutionaries, led by Castro? Castro was trained and financed in part by the Americans, because they found it convenient to overthrow the intractable Batista and install a new 'puppet' president. However, Castro had other ideas.

You might wonder why exactly did the American government care so much about what was happening in a small Caribbean island.

Well, Cuba is strategically placed near to the US, AND at that time, Cuba was a popular resort for wealthy Americans. Most of the land and businesses were owned by American businessmen, while the majority of native Cubans lived in poverty and were treated as second class citizens.

So, when the US government realised that Castro had no intention of falling in with their plans, they set about to get rid of him. It wasn't only because he was Communist! It was because, on assuming leadership of Cuba, Castro seized all assets (businesses, land etc) held by Americans (& wealthy Cubans) and placed them under State control. This would have undoubtedly pissed off a lot of wealthy, powerful Americans, and the US would react to that.

Do you know about the Bay of Pigs? That was one effort on the part of the US to oust Castro. And it hasn't been the only attempt.

In commenting about the atrocities commited by the revolutionaries, don't overlook those committed by the US. I don't think that there is ANY excuse to torture and kill people for any reason. However, it's done on both sides, and the excuse is always that it is for the cause. Isn't that the excuse put forward by the US in recent times?

The reason why you may not have heard a lot of things concerning Cuba, it because it is still a politically sensitive issue. The US is always trying to undermine Cuba. Hence the US trade embargo that has been placed on Cuba for the longest while.

So, a lot the information that you might hear is revised to put the US in a good light, and minimize the evil things they've done.

The same goes for Cuba. The information is presented in such a way as to emphasise the heroic accomplishments of the revolutionaries and downplay any atrocities.

The thing is to realise that both sides provide information that is conflicting, and you have to do research and decide for yourself what are the lies and what are the truths!!

Che was an inspiration to a lot of people. He was supportive of Castro. However, as soon as Castro won and put Che into a position of authority, the "rounding up" of supporters and alleged supporters of the prior government began.

Thousands were executed under Che's authority. Some were real bastards, and some were just trying to make a living and were associated with the Batista regime..

Victims of Che's blood bath included the mechanic for Batista's cars, and the nail technician who did Mrs. Batista's nails.

Castro fired Che Guevara. There is a theory that Castro's people assisted the Bolivian armed forces in hunting down Che: Better a dead martyr than a live embarrassment.

Guevara became a erroneous Communist (as though there's a such element as a guided Commie), who deserved to die for the crimes he committed. Now, speedy forward 50 years later his likeness is being worn via erroneous and poorly knowledgeable college scholars and his poster is exhibiting up in Barrack Obama's marketing campaign headquarters around the country... and my Liberal acquaintances tell me "do no longer situation..he's (Obama) for exchange" And this tale you contemporary became aside of the Che Guevara biography on the historic previous Channel. If all and sundry needs to comprehend no count if it fairly is real..merely ask any of the previous timer Cuban defectors now in Miami what form of man or woman he became and you could need to stand some time past for their answer.

Che was a travelling terrorist, fighting to free the poor oppressed peoples of each corrupt fascist dictatorship in Central & South America. He fought in revolutionary wars all over that region. Terrorist or freedom fighter will always depend on your politics and history.
He was highly motivated, highly principled and true to himself, doing what he genuinely believed was best. Unfortunately, many of the people who took over power used the same tactics as their predcessors.
