Yes, that is the best way to do it not only does it add insulation but you don't even want to see what's behind those old plaster walls and lathe and deal with that mess. Go for it, your on the right track. Use screws long enough to go through the drywall, plaster and lathe and you will get a good hold. Good Luck

Drywall Over Plaster

2016-10-01 10:47:38 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

I did it myself in a house I used 2 live in. The walls were lathe & plaster, had about 8-10 layers of wallpapers on them. were cracking, and just plain ugly! Tried 2 repair the cracks, but over-zealous boyfriend started picking the wall apart....w/a HAMMER!! So, there I was...watching his dumb *** tear up the wall, which in the end, I fixed! I finished his destruction and took it back down to the studs, then went from there. Yeah, you can drywall over plaster...but that's not the best job u can do. It may be cheaper & less labor, but if you OWN the home do the job right. Don't just half-*** it. U have to live there. Is that what you want people to see? If u rent, then go with the landlord's discretion. Above all else, DO try to patch the cracks first. If unable 2 patch, go from there.

Yes, plaster walls are commonly drywalled over. Typically 3/8 drywall, thinnest, to maximize remaining thickness of your wood molding around doors, windows, and baseboard. Depending upon on the baseboard you have, you can also drywall up to it without removing. Make sure this is what you want to do. There is nothing wrong with plaster, cracks and holes can easily ber fixed with drywall mud. To fix a crack properly, you must first make the crack bigger, to get mud into and behind it. The best tool to use for this crack widening is a "church key", This is the paint can opener often obtained from your paint dealer for prying open cans of paint. It has a bottle opener on the opposite end. Take the hook end of the church key and scrap the crack to make a trough, removing the back side of th e plaster with the hook. This will provide cavity to hold the drywall mud. Sand smooth and the crack is gone forever.

Yes, you can. First, you can screw/nail studs on the plastered wall. Afterwhich, the drywall which is normally fiber cement board can be screw to the studs or framing system which has a spacing of 2 feet apart. Likewise, the studs would assure plumbness of the new drywall (if the plastered wall is unplumbed). There are also different types of studs it could be wood with the size of 2x1 or 2x2 or light steel. Don't forget your electrical sockets (if any) you might cover them with the drywall.

After you put up the drywall, you have to fill the cracks, and finish it. Why not do that to the plaster, go to Lowes.

As long as the plaster is not loose you can stick plasterboard with drywall adhesive.

Believe me. Fixing the cracks is much easier than installing drywall. They make several products to help you fix the cracks.
