5u - 14 = -5 + 8u
You should put all the "u" terms together. and simplify the equation
So, what you do to one side of the equation, you must do to the other.
5u -5u -14 = -5 + 8u - 5u
Simplify
14=-5 + 3u
Than simplify the numbers by adding five to each side
-14 + 5 = -5 +5 + 3u
Simplify
9=3u
Simplify again by dividing each side by three
u = 3

Put the u's together and the ordinary numbers together; when a value (number or u) moves to the other side of the =, it changes from a minus number to a plus number (or vice versa). It's easier if you get the unknowns to one side and the numbers to the other.
So:
5u - 8u = -5 +14
-3u = 9
u = -3
(And no, you never need to know this stuff when you're a grownup. ;))

5u-14=-5+8u add -5u to each side
14=-5+3u add+5 to each side
19=3u divide both sides by 3
19/3=u can convert to mixed fraction, if wanted

Solve for 'U'. First you subtract 5U from both sides, which will make it -14 = -5+3U. Than you add 5 which is -9=3U, than divide both sides by 3 which is -9/3, which is -3.
