Why does Yahoo Answers reward the weak-minded?

Question

It seems that those who put themselves on the line by making truly controversial viewpoints are given the "thumbs down" most of the time, while the mind-numbing answers with little or no thought (and of which a Presidential candidate would be proud) are shot down without a second thought. I claim to be part of neither group, but I definitely respect the former over the latter. Are people rating these questions/answers really that much in favor of not rocking the boat?

I tend to take it as a compliment when I get 10-20 thumbs downs--means I made 10-20 people's heads hurt......and yes, I am pathetic--if I weren't I wouldn't be wasting my time on the vapid

I don't think it's so much a question of not rocking the boat as people "thumbs down"ing viewpoints that are in direct opposition to their own. I won't thumbs down an opposing viewpoint if it is well thought out but if it is based on stereotypes, a lot false information (not just a minor point) or just plain too stupid for words I will. I very rarely thumbs down the namby-pamby middle ground because they don't piss me off. On the other hand, I almost never thumbs up one either. (Almost because I might have if they snuck an original thought in somehow.)
