X grams times 1000= Y milligrams

In one case, (since I suspect this to be your homework I will use an unrelated example)

X being 3, 3 times 100= 3000 milligrams

1 gram = 1000 milligrams

Therefore, 5 grams = 5000 milligrams

(5 grams)*(1000 milligram/1 gram) = 5000 grams

Basically it's in the prefix. 'milli' means one-thousandth. So how do we convert? We ask ourselves 'how many thousandths' does it take to make 5?'

x/1000=5

x=5000, so 5grams = 5000 miligrams
