Quite possible...but in 5 billion years who knows what stage in technology we will be at.I mean, imagine what a T.V. would look like to a person 200 years ago.So imagine waht we will be able to do in 200 years, let alone 5 billion. We might have even started colonies on other planets, and have completely left Earth behind. My friend has read that scientists have begun to teleport single atoms, to a length of a single yard. They transmit light particle/waves with computer data to a machine that takes the data and completely creates the atoms structure.I give it 100 years, tops, for us to have created one that can teleport Homo Sapiens. In 200 years, we might have begun to start colonies on other planets. The hard part would be to set up a transmitter/receiver on this foreign planet.Since it takes light 200 million years to get from just one teeny tiny side of a galaxy square to it's other end, imagine how long it will take for us to get to another galaxy!
But, if we sent a probe, not with any human lives, to Alpha Centauri, which I beleive is the closest solar system to us, we could land a receiver on one of it's planets. Then, by haveing previously built a solar base, ready for any condition straight over there. So, in 5 billion years, we could be in another galaxy, haveing totally evolved from Homo Sapien bareing almost no resemblance at all. This would be a great sucess for us.So no, I don't think that our race will die because of Earth. But then again, if we pollute our Earth, the greenhouse effect will take place and we shall be in a climate close to that of Venus, haveing Sulfuric rain pounding our mutinous cars.So if we pollute our enviroment, aka the Earth, then we shall have no chance at all of surviving 5 billion years.
But don't think of it as a bad thing that we might not live another 5 billion years. We are still young, as apes have only been on the planet 2 million years.Given that, we've been around for, I'd say 500,000 years. 500,000 years and we are already polluting our Earth. But our prgression is incredible! We discovered radioactivity, I think around 50 years ago.And only a while later, we developed the nuclear bomb! Not a great example because nuclear bombs are the most horrible thing in the world, but if we set our minds to something good, like teleportation, we would quickly become a very interesting species.
Of course, this could always lead to unwanted attention.Extra Terrastial might want to have a look at us, by cutting us up.Now, this wouldn't be fun because if they can get to us quickly, then they must be very ahead of us.Ray guns, no.Something not fun...yes.So I think that no, most likely we can survive another 5 billion years if we get our heads in gear and stop getting McDonalds to go and then going home to watch football...

Planet Earth is responsible for the carbon based humanoid lifeforms that infest it, so even if old Gaia had a consciousness, then I doubt she is as fickle as most of her offspring and will support them for as long as is planetly possible. By the time Sol does give up its boots, we will have flown the nest and be in our student accommodation on Alpha Centuaria/ Alpha Proximas third or fourth inhabitable planets, kickin back with a generous size spliff and a bottle of JD.

I look forward to the time when we humanoids spread out across the galaxy, perhaps in a thousand years or so, and by then, we will declare Earth to be off limits to all humanoids, except perhaps a few researchers and a few tourists here and there. But will the planet last until then? That is the question.....

I think it is not to smart to give "planet Earth"
anthropomorphic qualities an then postulate the self elimination and demise of it's anthropomorphism. Euthanasia does not make much sense speaking of the remaining inert matter.
Man barely can make sense of the 100 years of its longevity. Why be so fond of speculating about the parsecs that it takes to reach the end of the universe, when man can not conceptualize even a miserable billion?

First: The planet itself is not sentient, and therefore can't have such a motive, or the ability to "wipe out" anything.
Second: Said carbon based humanoid life forms *are* the result of natural progression.

No, the carbon based humanoid life forms that infest it will wipe out the earth after they all aquire nuclear capabilities and have a "WMD Launch-fest."

No, the planet Earth won't wipe out the carbon-based life forms, but we carbon-based life forms are capable of doing it all by ourselves.

Perhaps not, but until that time all we hydrogen-based life forms can do about it is watch and laugh at their mistakes... mwuahahahhaha
Just kidding, hopefully not too soon!
