I often hear the phrase, "the white man is keeping us down". How is that so? Is it not the African American culture? Is it not the rap music that glorizes the, "thug life", or the fact that seventy percent of all children born to African Americans are out of wedlock? Is it not because that for blacks getting an education gets them the stigma of, "acting white"? Is it not because they don't have enough positive role modles?

Here in Birmingham we have one of the highest murder rates in the country, and it is black on black crime. Is that also the white man's fault?

Are not African Americans not to blame for their own problems?

I think Bill Cosby has a great message for his people, but most of them don't want to listen.

Dnovan you make an excellent point a crime is a crime. I don't believe we should have "hate crime laws" becasue all crime of that nature is a hate crime, but because black on black crime is so rampant especially where I live it has a label.

This is not a generalized statement. I never said that all Black people blame the white man. I simply asked why do African Americans blame the white man. Therefore you would have to perform the action in order to be part of the subject.

I would agree. Perhaps the white man could be to blame for holding back the black man to an extent, but there is discrimination amongst all people. You can be discriminated against if you are short, fat, ugly, and etc, but it is not an excuse for not trying to better yourself. Is it better to sit around and complain about it or get out and try to do something to better yourself.

Thanks everyone it is an interesting topic.

Although I think Tupac is a great poet, and he did preach to his people about bettering themselves. He was still a thug and lived a thug life.

Obviously this is a strong question. I would have to say that most people who say this, aren't in a very good place in their lives. They use the "White Man" as an excuse for being lazy or not being able to hold a job down. Yes there are people who discriminate on race but its not that much. My parents are black and are very successful. They don't blame the white man for other's bad luck. Most people just need to work harder. You are probably right. They are keeping themselves down. Also I never could understand "black on black crime." If a black person does a crime against another black person why does it have a name. Why can't you committ a crime against someone of the same race. You don't have white on white crime. Or hispanic on hispanic crime. A crime is a crime no matter what.

America is such a melting pot today, that who is the white man in 2006 that is holding them down? We're all on an equal playing field nowadays, and anybody who keeps blaming a phantom for their own deficiencies just plain doesn't want to take responsibility for their own lives. BTW, I come from a much much smaller minority than african americans, and although I've been discriminated against all my life, I refuse to cop out and blame my failures on other people.

Its much easier to blame someone else for your predicament if your not pleased with the way things turned out. And take credit for anything good that happens in ones life.

Human nature. We should not pander to cheap excuses. I am white born in Glasgow in a poor housing estate. i suffered descrimination on many levels and blamed no one I just got on with it. Everything for a reason.

The worst descrimination I have seen in the world is ageism for employment. Now when i recently returned to Scotland for a visit I seen lots of old folk getting employed in B & Q etc so things are getting better.

Jobs are there , it is just easier to sell drugs and make a quick buck than go out and work hard and try and climb the employment ladder.

I am black and I agree with what you are saying because some black people are so ignorant and they do not want to take responsibilty for there actions.

It is not fair to blame anyone but ourselves... There are some great black people who are doing the right things however, it is not being acknowledged. I am proud to be black and whatever the stupid black people do has nothing to do with me. WHY!!! Because I am my own individual... I also have an education, I am married, I have 3 beautiful children and I am making sure that I raise my children to have morals...

well i personally dont blame anyone for my problems. and i dont care if people say that i am acting white because i want to further my education, but MY people are still stuck on the slavery days instead of trying to take all the negative energy and turn it into inspiration to do better. i guess you need someone to blame for the oppression.

Because rascism and ignorance are still very much alive in America and African Americans do get treated as second class citizens to this day way too much.I'll let the rest answer by the great 2pac.

Killing us one by one
In one way or another
America will find a way to eliminate the problem
One by one
The problem is
the troubles in the black youth of the ghettos
And one by one
we are being wiped off the face of this earth
At an extremly alarming rate
And even more alarming is the fact
that we are not fighting back
Brothers, sistas, ******
When I say ****** it is not the ***** we are grown to fear
It is not the ***** we say as if it has no meaning
But to me
It means Never Ignorant Getting Goals Acomplished, *****
****** what are we going to do
Walk blind into a line or fight
Fight and die if we must like ******

This is for the masses the lower classes
The ones you left out, jobs were givin', better livin'
But we were kept out
Made to feel inferior, but we're the superior
Break the chains in our brains that made us fear yah
Pledge a legiance to a flag that neglects us
Honour a man that who refuses to respect us
Emmancipation, proclamation, Please!
***** just said that to save the nation
These are lies that we all accepted
Say no to drugs but the governments' keep it
Running through our community, killing the unity
The war on drugs is a war on you and me
And yet they say this is the Home of The Free
But if you ask me its all about hyprocracy
The constitution, Yo, it don't apply to me
Lady Liberty still the ***** lied to me
Steady strong nobody's gonna like what I pumpin'
But its wrong to keeping someone from learning something
So get up, its time to start nation building
I'm fed up, we gotta start teaching children
That they can be all that they wanna to be
There's much more to life than just poverty

This is defaintly ahhh words of wisdom
AMERIKA, AMERIKA, AMERIKKKA
I charge you with the crime of rape, murder, and assault
For suppressing and punishing my people
I charge you with robery for robbing me of my history
I charge you with false imprisonment for keeping me
Trapped in the projects
And the jury finds you guilty on all accounts
And you are to serve the consequences of your evil schemes
Prosecutor do you have any more evidience

Words of Wisdom
They shine upon the strength of an nation
Conquer the enemy on with education
Protect thy self, reach with what you wanna do
Know thy self, teach what we been through
On with the knowledge of the place, then
No one will ever oppress this race again
No Malcolm X in my history text
Why is that?
Cause he tried to educate and liberate all blacks
Why is Martin Luther King in my book each week?
He told blacks, if they get smacked, turn the other cheek
I don't get it, so many questions went through my mind
I get sweated, They act as if asking questions is a crime
But forget it, one day I'm gonna prove them wrong
Now every brother had to smother on the welfare line
The american dream, though it seems it attainable
They're pulling your sleeve, don't believe
Cause it will strangle yah
Pulling the life of your brain, I can't explain
Beg as you can obtain from which you came
Swear that your mother is living in equality
Forgeting your brother that's living her apology
Thought they had us beat when they took our kids
But the battle ain't over till the black man sings
Words of Wisdom
But the battle ain't over till the black man sings

Why do dumb@sses sent on computers all day generalizing entire ethnic and racial groups? I'm African American and I don't blame white people for nothing that goes on in my life! Why do you people keep generalizing all African Americans by the actions of the black people in your area? Why don't you people get a real life, and stop stereotyping and generalizing us? Because believe it or not, most of us are over the whole "blame whitie thing." F*cking dum@ss....

What i think is funny is how the white rednecks complain that they can't get a job because of "all the blacks are takin our jobs"...If you are a white man in this country and you can't get a job its because you are $%@#%$#^ stupid. and if you are black and you don't study in school and you won't take entry level jobs like janitors or gas station clerks or fast food jobs...is it really those idiot redknecks who are holding you back? hell they cant even spell "get it done" correctly
