stops people from interacting with each other?

I don't mind chilling out at home by myself, or even with my girlfriend while watching television.

But.....

I hate going to friends' houses who seem to have the television on just to have it on. People get distracted, and stare at a box instead of interact with each other.

Anyone else feel the same?

A bunch of friends and I get together on Wednesday's to watch Lost. We make time in our schedule for it, when otherwise we'd be busy doing other stuff. So I'd say that TV can enhance interaction if you do it right.

I feel the same as you do. I always have the TV turned off if I have guests, and sometimes I will put on a CD that isn't distracting (like Beethoven). I think that a lot of people are concerned about people not having much to say, and the TV becomes a crutch for communicating. The only time I have the TV on is if I already know there is something on that I want to watch (like Nightline or Boston Legal). To me, a quiet household is necessary to deal with the insane busyness of our day to day lives.

i would not even have tv if it wasn't for my niece and my boyfriend being here and wanting it... i find it sucks me in and i cant stop watching it... and i know exactly what you mean about going to people's houses and the tv being on and them not paying attention to your visit... my father guilts me into visiting them (my parents) every now and then and then has the tv on the whole freakin time! i hate it!

yes people get interested and do not know what is said. they miss out on a lot of real life. but TV does help boredom at times.

yes I do. I actually fall guilty to that. I've noticed that everytime i'm in my room and not even watching tv that it must be on. It just shows how dependent we are on tv.

You're friends must be five-year-olds. I don't know anyone like that.
