I fear there can be no such thing but lets bat this around to learn what others think.

We would need to insure that no constitutional guarantees are violated.

Think about it people, you have to register a car to drive it but you don't worry about the government impounding it unless you break the laws.

Chicago bans handguns? That violates the rights of citizens but gives the police and open hand in nabbing gangers who carry. I fail to see how the city can ban hanguns in total there is already a ban on concealed weapons.

There are over 20,000 gun laws in the US. Start enforcing the laws that we already have.

First off, legalize concealed carry or even open carry (rifles in a rack, loaded etc.) That would take care of a lot of crimes. Shift the focus from the welfare of the criminal committing the crime to the rights of the victims (criminal pulls a weapon to accomplish a robbery, he opens himself to be shot by any armed person nearby. The same should be permitted to the police.) Teach people gun safety. We already have the mechanisms in place to tip us off when criminals try to purchase guns. That's really all the gun control we need. Take the criminals off the streets. Use the death penalty more and speed up the process. Enforce existing gun laws, of which we already have too many. I know this may not sound like gun control, but I bet it would really cut down on gun crime.

I would suggest we make any crime committed with a gun punishable by a minimum of 20 years in prison. No probation, no early release, no nothing!! Then perhaps these low life criminals would think twice about picking up a gun.
As for law abiding citizens, our 2nd Amendment Right to keep and bear arms should never be compromised.
