Yes it happens which means it's normal. It's even somewhat common. Don't make him feel bad, ever! When it is poopy time ask him, do you need to go potty. Everytime he does, and doesn't have an accident that day, make sure to praise him. You really did good today, no accidents, I'm proud of you, we'll get through this...... Go ahead and talk to the doctor. He could be stressed about something. Can't hurt. But, you should get on it before he has an accident in front of one of him peers. That type of embarrassment is not good for him.

No this is not normal, I have a 10 year old who does this and it's not that he isn't making it, but rather the poop is not wanting to come out, I forgot what my dr. called it, but he should go and see a gastroenterologist and have it checked out. If he does have the same problem as my son, then he may have to be admitted to the hospital and have something called a go-lightly done and spend 24 hours on the hospital. Or he could just not want to go and there fore he will get all plugged up. And than you'll end up in the hospital for longer. Bring him to your dr. and ask him or her.

Tell him you want to help and ask him why he does it. If he can't feel that it's coming, a trip to the doctor might be in order. If he just wants to hold it, maybe you need to set up some kind of reward for every day without an accident, or every week without one. Maybe he's not eating right and it's just "slipping out". (even as adults, we've all had that problem). Some nutritional problems like lactose intolerance, can cause runny poo and loss of control.

Talk to him before rushing to a doctor.

Maybe he's suffering from encopresis in which case he needs an enema. Or maybe he's doing it deliberately - in which case I suggest you "punish" him by re-enacting potty training, the old fashioned way. You make sure he gets up early in thr morning (to allow time before school), escort him to the toilet and give him ten minutes to empty his bowels, letting it be known that you intend to inspect the results. And if he can't or won't do some dirt, then you give him an enema. Repeat until he sees the wisdom of proper bowel control.

As far as I know.. .yes. My brother did poop his pants for years, even though he was potty trained. He naturally stopped on his own as he grew up. The last incident I can recall was when he was ten... but even then, that was like a one time thing when he was ten.... you never hear of any college students who poop their pants (besides drunk blubbering idiots and ones who do it on purpose).

No it can be normal problems, IE. He may need to pass wind and accidently poops. maybe you should also let him know that he is not in trouble wen he does it and he can tell you, just see a doctor and get a medical opinion, but all in all its reasonably normal! Don't stress!

I would call the dr and explain the situation. If you bring your son there it may be embarssing. I think sometime kids are just lazy and dont want to be bothered by going to the bathroom.

Did this problem coincide with some major change in his life -- like starting school?

Some kids have trouble getting used to using a strange bathroom.
