A solution is a special type of mixture.
A solution is homogeneous, it is the same throughout.

An example of a solution would be Table salt dissolved in water, producing a solution of Sodium Chloride. An example of a mixture which is not a solution would be oil and water.

There are two kinds of mixtures: homogeneous and heterogeneous. An homogeneous mixture is called, also, a solution - for example sugar dissolved in water. An heterogeneous mixture - such as oil and water - is just a mixture.

a solution is a liquid with one or more other liquids mixed in. It has to be a mixture.
A mixture could be a solution or it could be a mixture of solids or gases. The atmosphere is a mixture of gases.

you can mix salt and water, thus it must be a mixture, but it is also a solution because it combined on a molecular level.
And of course dry beans and dry rice can become a mixture, but it does not mix on a molecular level.

maybe perhaps because a solution would be liquid form and a mixture a solid form.
