Medical lab jobs can be summarized into phlebotomists (draw blood), medical technicians (2 yr degree), and medical technologists (4yr degree and experience.) Low pay, monotonous work, low prestige, and dead-end career, have caused a shortage in medical lab staff. While you can get into respiratory therapy with less education (2 yrs for example,) more education will be beneficial long-term. Pay is better for RT's and there are more options for working (sleep labs, home, office, clinics, hospital etc.) So while it is easier to get a MT job, you will make more working RT.

My wife is a medical technologist. She is always getting job offers and makes great money. Well over 60 grand a year, working only 40 hours a week, in the air conditioning. Get your 4 year degree and go for it. Once you get a few years of experience under your belt, the money is good and the job is very secure.
