The standard deviation tells you nothing about the accuracy (how close the numbers are to the Real value). The standard deviation is the measure of the precision of the measurements (how close the measurements are to each other).

If you want to know the REAL accuracy of any measurements or repeated tests, then DON'T use standard deviation. It can give you results that are simply not true in the real world. Its often used by companies selling scientific measuring equipment (weighing equipment is a classic) to claim the product is of a higher accuracy than is really the case (and no I don't know why this is legal, but it is). If you want to prove this, just set up a list of say 10 numbers on your spreadsheet and then apply standard deviation to the set of 10 numbers. you will find the error by std dev can be lower than the largest difference between any two of the ten numbers.
