I really want to be a car designer when I grow up, but I don't really know where to start. What do I need to study in college, how long do I have to be in college, etc...

Thanks for help.

Write to all major car manufacturers home and abroad and ask what qualifications they are looking for and ask if it is ok for you to contact them again when you have achieved those qualifications.

Let them know your current age and you would welcome a trip to their factory at your expense if they would allow it.

Good Luck.

Your best bet would be a degree in Mechanical Engineering if you want to deal with the actual design. I'm sure some companies also hire industrial or graphic designers to sketch out conceptual ideas.

I'm going to graduate myself in a few months with a degree in mechanical engineering and it seems that most major car manufacturers are very serious about their job applicants (Its a very sought after position)

Mastering some CAD design programs could also boast your chances, in college they don't teach enough of it-- atleast at UW-Madison.

Take every math, science, and computer class you can in high school, then you will major in Engineering in college.
