Outward Signs means things that you see happening that indicate something is going on. If someone is showing outward signs of drug addiction it means you see the high all the times, or burned out all the time.

Outward signs of modern day trends would mean you see people doing more & more things that are trendy. When body peircing became popular, you started seeing more and more people with them. Soon when everybody had them, the outward signs went away.

Outward signs are signs that you can readily sense. Signs that
you can see, smell. hear, taste and are noticed by everyone. On your question about modern day trends, it depends on which trends you speak of. Appearance, conversation, buying trends, etc.

The phrase 'outward signs' is asking you to give 'real-world examples' of the changing subject.

Examples would be how clothing has changed from one generation to the next, or how speach patterns changed as people moved from England to the New World, or how our lives have changed now that we have TiVo.

I would use the word "clue" in place of outward sign.

You see things happening that lead you to a conclusion that there is a trend toward something.
