because religion is something that people feel very strongly about and back up very thorougly and are usually stubborn about (the stubborn part can be both a negative and a positive, negative in war i think though)

Religion is grounded in faith. Faith is a complex system of strongly held beliefs, which are not necessarily rational. What this means is that someone can hold in their head that something is true, even though there is strong evidence to believe otherwise, or simply no evidence at all.

This condition sometimes sets people of different and conflicting faiths into fighting over who is right. In these cases, they may fight over something that can't be proven, either way, so the conflict grows and grows, out of control.

The more firmly a belief is held, and the greater the quantity of points of difference in a set of beliefs, the deeper the potential for conflict as we have witnessed recently between America and the Middle East.

Importantly, it takes awareness and communication of these differences to generate conflict. Opposing beliefs held in relative isolation generally don't lead to conflict. Its when they meet, head on, that conflict arises.

In matters like religion, neither side will want to give in; it's what they believe in, and that's an extremely hard thing to change.

When someone challenges something you really feel strongly about, you're not going to want to give up, are you?

Coming to blows over religion really doesn't mesh with the beliefs of any religion I can think of, but if it comes to that point, it is often going to keep going on until both sides reach a point where they not only support religious tolerance (no one will be persecuted for his/her beliefs), but also religious EQUALITY (all religions and creeds have the same rights and none will be discriminated against).

Because more often than not the fact that a religion's mythology says that it was handed down from an all-knowing and thus infallible God. In the mind of the believer, any who say otherwise must be heathens or infidels.

Plus, Christians, Muslims and others can find justifications for bloody actions in their holy books.

Among the Bible are these telling passages:

Whoever sacrifices to any god, except the Lord alone, shall be doomed. (Exodus 22:19)

They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul; and everyone who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. (2 Chronicles 15:12-13)

If a man still prophesies, his parents, father and mother, shall say to him, "You shall not live, because you have spoken a lie in the name of the Lord." When he prophesies, his parents, father and mother, shall thrust him through. (Zechariah 13:3)

If your own full brother, or your son or daughter, or your beloved wife, or you intimate friend, entices you secretly to serve other gods, whom you and your fathers have not known, gods of any other nations, near at hand or far away, from one end of the earth to the other: do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kill him. Your hand shall be the first raised to slay him; the rest of the people shall join in with you. You shall stone him to death, because he sought to lead you astray from the Lord, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. And all Israel, hearing of this, shall fear and never do such evil as this in your midst. (Deuteronomy 13:7-12)

Deuteronomy 13:13-19 says that you should kill the people of an entire town if but one among them worships another god.

Because 9 times out of 10 Muslims are on one side of the conflict. Look at the world today. Almost every conflict has a Muslim group on one side.

religious conflicts are bloody and difficult to solve because they involve insane people.

unfortunately these people have an enormous belief in an imaginary being and are basically insane.

they cannot be reasoned with.

if you are lucky you can just let them be and they will leave you alone.
