No they werent. First of all the names of the muppets Bert and Ernie were taken from the movie "Its a Wonderful Life" starring Jimmy Stewart, it was the names of the cops in the movie.
Secondly, Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie are only 6 & 7 so how can they be gay. Its only the conservative parental wackos now a days who think that every other cartoon or children's character is gay.
Bert & Ernie are kinda like the Odd Couple or Perfect Strangers (lol) for kids, they are friends who live together, one is a neat freak the other is messy and fun loving! Dont hate tolerate. :-)

Technically they could have been but as Bert used to be Roberta, before the operation, there is still some debate about that. Ernie himself confessed that having a mans hand up your rear end all day tended to spoil any sexual cravings that he ever had. On the one day that they did attempt an embrace the metal poles attached to their hands fused because of a freak magnetic storm and this made visits to the toilet so embarassing that both confessed to having let one go live on air.

No, as in all children's programmes they were asexual.
Did you know that the names Ernie & Bert were deliberatly lifted from Jimmy Stuart's "It's a Wonderful Life"? They were the copper and the taxi driver...

I dont think thats what they were teaching kids. Its hardly appropriate for the ages of the people who watch that show to explain gay/striaght issues. Would a 3yr old really understand that????
