make sure the plug wires are on in the right order ... standard 302's have a different firing order than an HO 302. there are 4 cylinders that changed. i had a friend do this on his mustang and it also shot flames out the exhaust. might not be the same situation but its worth checking if they have been changed or removed recently. HO firing order is 1,3,7,2,6,5,4,8 ...... and standard 302 firing order is 1,5,4,2,6,3,7,8 and the distributor rotates counter-clockwise.
hope this helps.

This sounds like an ignition problem...perhaps a bad coil or bad "brain box"...or a bad pick up coil in the distributor..is it carburated or fuel injected....need more info on this before I can elaborate more.

feels like a carburettor or gas grant situation or could be ignition device. no longer uncomplicated for us to diagnose without utilising the vehicle. Get it appeared at a neat vehicle like that could desire to be cared for.
