I see the volumn icon in the start button and when I click on it, nothing happens. Would you agree that I should bring this in for service, or just buy a new comp? But I want to try and fix this small problem.

Somewhere during the process of the defrag. some files were lost. This could have happened during the scandisk looking for disc errors and removing the unused clusters that these programs remove. If you find the disc that the sound card came with it will give instructions on how to reload the driver software. That should do it.

Well usually a defrag really doesnt hurt your machine.

It could be just a coincidence.

Go to Control Panel - click on system
Under system click on hardware tab
click device manager

Look for sound and check for any "!" in yellow. If there are some then it is a hardware issue. Delete the drivers and reinstall. Good Luck.

Defragmenting your computer has nothing to do with not having sound, by nature of what it does. All defragging does is re-arrange information on your hard disk so associated information is close together. This way your hard drive isnt jumping all over the place to find information. Subsequently, its possible to have a single file reside fregmented in several spots on your hard drive. Your "No sound issue" is just a coincidence that appeared around the same time. Check the driver. Check the volume control. Check where its plugged in on the computer.

I'm guessing this is a windows computer? Start---> Settings---control panel-----> Add/remove hardware then have the machine look for your sound card. try that or just restart.
