A killer genarally only kills once or maybe in unrelated incedents, but a serial killer is one that kills certain people many times or under certain circumstances, often to fulfill some sort of fantasy they have.

Serial killers are people who kill on at least three occasions, taking breaks between murders.
The term allows criminologists to distinguish those who kill several people over a long period of time from those who kill several people during a single event (mass murderers). A third type of multiple killer is a spree killer.
A spree killer commits multiple murders in different locations over a period of time that may vary from a few hours to several days. Unlike serial killers, however, they do not take a long break and resume their everyday lives between slayings.

Serial Killers kill again and again. They are particularly dangerous because they are sick mentally but otherwise very smart in terms of hiding their movements and motives. They are often random attackers who know enough to not build a pattern to their activities because if they do investigators will be able to apprehend them in the act.
Part of the thrill for Serial Killers is to out wit authorities, it gives them a sense of power just like the act of killing gives them a sense of power over the victim.
There is a degree of disassociation almost always within these people that acts like a wall between them and what is happening to their victims.

a serial killer kills more than one person- a "serial" or string of murders. many have the same hallmarks- type of victim, weapon used, method of body disposal. I think a person is considered a 'serial killer' after 5 victims, but I'm not sure.
