I'm sorry, I need to make my question clearer. My father has no control over his bladder. Someone at a health care supply store recommended an external catheter. I looked it up on the internet and it's like a condom with a tube coming out and going into a bag which is worn in the underwear. I'd like to know more about them. Thank you!

An external catheter fits over the head of the penis, much like a condom. It has a type of sticky latex coating to keep it in place. This is simple to apply and can be removed when unwanted.

They can be difficult with regard to leaking, and need to be carefully applied to get a good seal around the glans. You can't leave them on all the time, because the glans will be constantly wet and becomes sore.

It does not cause stress on the bladder, and is not likely to lead to urinary tract infections.

An internal catheter passes through the urethra and into the bladder. It is held in place by an inflatable balloon. This is normally inserted by a medical professional, although home carers can be trained to insert and care for this type of catheter.

no longer than i'm conscious of, a great-unfold catheter is inserted in the urethra, what you're describing in basic terms feels like a sheath linked to a drain tube, like some adult males will placed on who're incontinent. The catheter won't be painful dude, I had one a pair of cases final fall, rather feels unusual being pulled out, yet no longer likely painful.

Hello

My father has a external catheter. He lost the elasticity in his bladder after being given and anesthesia. It was a relatively simple surgery it put it in. He went to the hospital in the morning and was home by 4pm.

Condom catherter..one way to prevent the mess especially when your father is lying on bed...but the problem with it when the problem is really inside the bladder(urinary) must have a retain urinary catheter..but the problem with it(retain cath)...it's prone to infection..maybe your father can have the condom catheter...by the way..the condom cath..really has to attach with a urinary bag..simply that you have to drain it....in that way you can also measure the output(urine) from the bag...

go to a hospital supple store and get one and have him try it out or go to a urologist for help. there are medications that may help or there could be something else wrong thats causing this problem. either way have a doc check it out first.
