Jonathan Strange and Mr.Norrell, by Susanna Clarke, is a mix between Harry Potter action/magic and Jane Austen language/wittiness. It is a pretty long novel about 2 magicians in 19th century England. It is really good, just have a bit of patience with it. I guaranttee that you'll feel satisfied with it when you finish the book.
Try Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien. It's a classic. Still, patience is a virtue. So have patience when you read the trilogy.

If you like books that are mostly geared toward a younger audience (but ones that adults can also enjoy), I would recommend:
I, Coriander, by Sally Gardner. This one actually was the winner of the Nestle Children's Book Prize: Age 9-11.
The Lionboy series is also very good, written by Zizou Corder.

have you read "the somg of albion" series by stephen lawhead? it's really good. he also wrote a series about king arthur. david eddings wrote a couple of series about a group of people on a quest. "the belgariad" and "the malloreon" they are each 5 books, but they are a quick read. he has some other stuff too. you might like the Pern books by anne mccaffrey. they are fun. or try the xanth novels by piers anthony. there are a ton of them and they are so funny.
the links below are some info on the eddings and anne mccafffrey.
good reading

Try The Bartimaeus Trilogy, by Jonathan Stroud. Really clever and funny. The first book is "The Amulet of Samarkand".
