1. Change the mixed numbers to improper fractions. 4 1/4= 17/4 and 2 2/3=8/3 So the equation now is 17/4÷8/3 2. (This is a rhyme I learned from school) When dividing, don't ask why, flip the second and multiply. In 17/4÷8/3, the second fraction is 8/3. So you flip it and it becomes 3/8. Now instead of dividing, you are now multiplying. So now the equation is 17/4x3/8. 3. Multiply. When multiplying, you multiply the numerators(top part of fraction) and the denominators(bottom part of fraction). So 17/4x3/8 is 51/32. 4. Put into Simplest Form. To put into simplest form, change the improper fraction back into a mixed number. So 51/32 becomes 1 19/32. Since you cannot simplify anymore, the answer is 1 19/32. 5. Check your answer. Our teacher always told us to check our answer by estimating. 4 1/4 rounds to 4, and 2 2/3 rounds to 3. 4÷3 is about 1 1/3, which is close to 1 19/32
