There is no doubt that racism really exist and racism is really bad here in America with Britain running a very very close second and the Australians having a firm hold on thrid place. But my question why do so many white racist always think that they look good with a tan and some white people spend good money to get a nice tan. I am just wondering if it is really some instictive urge that makes them want to look like their first ancestors. Also I know that many white people hate it when they can not tan For I have heard that statement from some of my own realitives. I just wonder that if you despise a race so badly like so many whites people claim that they do, than why would these same people would want to imitate the color of their skin. It just does not make any sense to me. Are white people trying to prove that they are better black man then the black man is. This really confuses me to no end....

I know that rasim runs in all directions, I also know that racism is stupid no matter who is doing the hating. My question is why does it still exist... What purpose does it really serve in this day and age

People get confused and think that "they" are different from "us," that "we" are not like "them." Don't they see we are all one? What hurts you hurts me hurts all of us.

Just because someone wants a tan doesn't make them a racist. I'm extremely pale, borderlining on albino, which is the mark of my northern European ancestors. I have blue eyes and blond hair, anglo-saxon. I have the temperment of an Irish woman (and it's worse when my hair is dyed red).

Take a look at models, actresses, the faces and bodies that are everywhere. Are they deathly white? No. But do I want a super dark skin tone? No. I want something that at least keeps me from looking dead in any color.

It's not a racism thing. You're completely going in the wrong direction. It's nothing more than a need to fit in with what society deems as exceptable.

I do not know what purpose it still has today, but I had people I used to call friends that were extremal racist. I am adopted me and my brother both adopted into the same family so as to not separate us from each other (we were only infants when we were adopted), and we have no idea of what ethnicity we are. By looking at are physical features we appear to have some Native American ancestry and/or European (Mediterranean region) Ancestry; however a bit of both is far more likely. Knowing this I never really bought into that whole 'racial purity' garbage because as far as I know I could be Martian (I am only speaking metaphorically here I am not being serious about the Martian thing) I really do not know who my biological mother and father were. I think it's a bunch of people doing one of two thing: they are compensating for a small ego, and/or they are still stuck back in the times where if you were not a white Christian male or female you were consider a second class person.

First off I think most people that are racist for the most part it is not skin color but it is a fear or misunderstanding of a different culture.. Yes it is sad to say there are people that will look at the color of skin and immediately pass judgment on them some of them it is how they were raised it is no excuse but they choose to stick to their families beliefs. Illegal immigration is another reason some are racist.
Secondly blacks I cant say for sure but some may still hold a grudge because of slavery and it could even be because there are so many people out there that still want to keep them down for whatever reason.
Third Latinos I believe span all the way back to the Spanish American war their ancestors who fought in the war or lost family in that war may have become racist and like I said earlier it has been passed down through the generations. It is also once again an ego problem. It all could have been avoided had the pioneers of this country not set out to claim "their" land. It was written in Washington once California had been claimed as a territory that any white man could ride up to a ranch house and tell the Latino family to leave their home and take it for themselves. The punishment if they did not comply was DEATH!! There have been whites with an ego problem since day one. Always taking taking taking. During the gold rush there was no law at least against the white man. If he wanted someones gold or horse or both he could take it legally if not he could kill them and take it legally. so there was a lot of racism born from those days as well. It is actually where the legend of Zorro was born (that's another story)
Fourth and easiest... NATIVE Americans I mean the the TRUE first Americans. Most of the land taken was Indian land... They destroyed entire villages and there were several tribes completely wiped out, they did this for years on their quest to claim "their" land. The Indians had no problems when whites first arrived they welcomed them and kept them alive that winter and the whites.... well they thanked them with Small Pox. what a way to thank someone for saving your families. So once again it was passed down through generations. I do have to laugh every time I see the KKK on Springer saying go back to your own country... I want to tell them go ahead lead by example go back to England or Ireland or Germany or where ever your ancestors are from because the KKK is not welcome here.
I honestly don't really know anything about racism towards Asians I just haven't seen it.. I'm sure there are those people out there that don't like them for whatever reason.
To sum up Whites are racist either because they don't understand the culture or because of their egos for whatever reason they think they should have one. And every one else they are mainly racist towards whites because of the whites egos! So loose the egos guys and I'm not talking just to whites everyone but mostly whites... DON"T discriminate just because you saw the color of their skin that is NO reason to look down on someone.. Give people the benefit of a doubt before you cast your judgment. But do me a favor..... if you do run into a KKK member tell them to go back where they came from. Racism needs to end, so if you do have racist feelings PLEASE don't pass on the disease to your children or grandchildren.

Well, I agree with you that it is stupid, and there ARE a lot of stupid people in the world. As to 'why' racism exists - it seems that many humans fear and hate what they do not understand, & what is different from us. For the same reason (or lack of it), people hate those of different religions that they know nothing about., like the Mormons for an example. Or Islam? (But, alas, some of them have given us reason to fear, unless it was an 'inside job', as some have suggested.)

As for why so many white people want to get tanned, now that I honestly have no idea on. I do know that it is a dangerous practice, especially since the ozone layer began to get depleted.

i could never understand that myself. like that guy on 'ask a black dude' on dave chapelle said....everybody wants to be black, but nobody wants to be black. it means that the white people have no problem imitating the blacks in dress style and music and such, but they still try to be better than them. i think that people are just plain afraid. afraid of something they don't understand and don't want to know about. theyr'e so afraid that they end up hating the black people and they don't even know why. even george bush....he put racism on the back burner because of the crap going on with terrorism. he;s putting other people from other countries ahead of his own people here in the USA!!!! and what's up with the drugs and crime? i have seen more white people doing that crap than the blacks. i will tell you this....and i said it a few years ago. if it ever came down to a civil war, i would be on the black side. i am white, but i have no use for hipocrites and biggomists. my sister is biracial, i have black friends and my man is black. and all of these people are wonderful. i just wish more people would take that chance and get to know black people. they might just develop some real good friendships.

I don't know. Racism is just horrible. About the tanning thing, it causes cancer. So you can look at it this way. If a person that hates people with dark skin, and they tan, then they have a better chance with getting cancer. So it is possible they are going to get what they deserve in the long run.

First of all, what makes you think that folks who like a good tan are in fact racist???? I do not understand how "those same people who are racist want to look dark skinned" or whatever, just to paraphrase here. Perhaps, behold THIS idea, THERE IS MORE THAN JUST ONE OR TWO KINDS OF WHITE PEOPLE!!!

Second of all, and anecdote, while we are at it since you mentioned racism in countries all affected by massive immigratory invasion. After the race riots in France, a group of real bastards (perhaps the French equivalent of 'The Great American Redneck', that dying breed...) made a huge flag which they exposed at a soccer game to national and international media, and the flag read: "The problem is not that we are racist, the problem is that you are black." No shyness there, I suppose.....

People measure and compare themselves and each other by an almost endless number of categories, not only race; basically, the same psychological dynamic is at work in all of these categories. Some common examples that people use to measure and discriminate include weight, height, wealth, knowledge, nationalism, age, what school you went to, religion, big feet, little feet, geographic location, what automobile you drive, language and dialect, and of course race. The list is as long as the list of categories itself. The psychology behind this is that people are measuring and comparing themselves by each other in order to try and validate a sense of self-worth. But does the kind of car we drive really define us? Does the color of our skin really define us. Of course not. But some people think so. The category that one uses to discriminate is not so important as getting to the root of the problem to understand that true self-worth does not exist in whether we are tall or short, rich or poor, black or white, or whether we eat American rice or Oriental rice, etc., etc. I have never met anyone who is free of these kind of judgmental practices. But we should strive to contantly get free of the judmental attitude. This is a life work. Anyone who can achieve it can attain to a deep sense of peace and appreciation for all life. In the meantime we need to try to find a detached outlook without hating those who discriminate in return. Ultimately, we can take this responsibility for our own growth and transformation upon ourselves. This is my view anyway.

I remember reading something about tanning. It said in the 50's and 60's only people who got tans usually got them from going on vacation. It said that tan skin was an indication of wealth. I am pale and I love my skin. Why do black girls get fake hair? Every skin color is gorgeous! (even the tanned ones!)

I don't know about racism, but I have always found it amusing that white people want to look black (tans) and black people want to look white (straight hair). Nothing wrong with it, but it still amuses me.
