I just got into graduate school this year, and each week i have to read at least 500 pages for just 1 class. There are 3 classes, plus teaching as a teaching assistant and grading my student's papers. I am working very hard, but i still struggle a bit. Do anyone have suggestion for how to read quickly while getting the main points out of the text?

thank you!

When you look at a chapter, there are many things to notice right away. Skim through and find every section and subheading. Highlight these. Also, notice any pictures, charts, graphs, etc. and highlight the captions. Highlight any words in bold or italic text.

Go back and read the first and last paragraph of every section. Highlight any important ideas. Read the captions of any pictures and study carefully any charts or other graphic organizers. Read any sentences/paragraphs with words in different text.

These strategies will not give you every single bit of information in the text, but will get most of the main ideas. Most texts also have useful chapter summaries. Good luck!

OK, I'm asssuming time is of the essence. Can you get the books on CD or tape and listen in the car? Always take the book into the bathroom and read, read, read. If you stop for coffee or dinner alone...Read. Don't turn on the television, but if you do, read on commercials. Finally, read slower, write the main points out...you'll remember more. No one remembers 500 pages worth of information unless they have a photographic memory. One more trick,,,read aloud into a tape recorder and play that on the way to work. Hang in there.
