What kind of external catheter? Like a urinary cateter? E-mail me with more specific questions, and I'll answer them if I can.

I used to work in a hospital and had to empty foley catheters (bladder catheters) for some patients. I had one temporarily after a surgical procedure. They are sometimes used post surgery or for someone who is paralyzed and has no control of his or her bladder. They are kept in place by a small "balloon" filled with a small amount of sterile water. When they are removed, the water is taken out and the catheter is gentley removed. It's a little uncomfortable but better than not being able to go pee.
