Sounds like your vid card driver is maxing out. You need to check for a new updated driver. Be sure to completely uninstall the old driver before installing the new one because if it is not completely updated and bits of the old driver remain, you will have more glitches.

If your hardware is too maxed out, there will be a lot of red marks on this test. Notice which areas are red. It will tell you where to get new drivers if need be.
In the black box, pick The Sims 2 - or the version in question

The more EPs you have, the more problems there can be with an 'office' computer that isn't designed for gaming. Low end gaming computers will start to have problems with some of the Sims graphics.

One thing you can do is go into the video settings of your game and turn all the stuff to lower resolution. That's on the green control dial with the three dots. Check the computer icon and turn graphics to low. You might also check the gears icon to see that nothing is set too high. Then save the settings and quit game, reboot and see if it is better.

I have one computer (a laptop) that shows all the sims in a flat cartoonlike way. It is a new computer but the settings are not a blazing fast as my desktop. My desktop can show almost lifelike detail in the graphics. The desktop slows down when I play big lots. The laptop is better used on small lots with cartoonlike graphics.
