Rods have small inserts called bearings, which float on the oil pushed through the crank by the oil pump. The rod probably is not bad, just the insert is worn out. This allows the rod to move around, and will eventually "throw" and damage the engine. If you are capable, you can drop the oil pan, unbolt the bottom of the rod, and replace the inserts. Not expensive, but need some skill and a torque wrench.
There is some stuff called Plastiguage that measures the space between the rod and crank, and tells you what size bearing inserts to buy.

ok don't know if you know much about the internal working of an engine...but the rod is what connects the piston to the crankshaft...normally people say you "have a rod knocking" Which really means a conntcting rod bearing is bad and the rod is bouncing around on the crankshaft...this usually means a new engine or an engine rebuild...and can be caused by either normal wear and tear...if it's hi milage car...or neglect...such as not changing your oil regularly and not checking the oil.

You need to go get that fix ASAP before it causes some serious damage... it is not hard to fix yourself if you work on cars often... if you dont'... then don't attempt it... Rods are suppose to be straight... I've seen bad ones come out in an 'S'... They'll also cause metal shavings to get in your engine and oil... that will cause problems over time too!!

What he means is that the connecting rod that attaches to the crank shaft sounds like the bearing is worn out

Is there a bad knocking sound coming from your motor? If so then you are going to need to replace the motor or rebuild it pretty soon!! Good luck!

if you have a bad rod then it is knocking real loud. if you have a valve tap then it is pinging kinda noise and if it smokes then you need rings unless it only smokes when first started that would be valve guide seals
