Every word that fits in the following sentence is a preposition:

The mouse ran ___________ the box.

I.e., under, into, over, beside, behind and so on. Does this help?

Have you been required to memorize a list of prepositions?

Create a chart for yourself based on what letter the prepositions start with. Know how many there are for each letter. Also, think of groups (e.g., words starting with in--in, inside, into). These strategies may help you.

There are about sixty commonly used prepositions and about twenty commonly used compound prepositions, so you will really need to study if you have to know all of them!

You could also make up a little song to go with the words, and you could hum it quietly while you take your test. (It works well to change the words of a song you know, like "Clementine.")

List them in alphabetical order. Study them in order, and it should help you remember if you've left any out when you write them on the test. Good luck! Also, get someone to listen to you as you try to recite them all. If you can't do that, test yourself by trying to list them all over and over....
