I have a linksys WRT54G router. I have always used it to route from a cable modem. I tried to hook it up the same way to my DSL modem and when I collect connect it says "Connecting thru WWE winport" or something like that, the says "remote computer not responding" what am I doing wrong? This is very frustrating!
Thx

Perhaps your DSL line uses PPPoE which requires a username and password to logon and access the internet.

Or maybe it's the linksys router - I've seen MANY linksys routers fail... and one US Robotics router fail. NEVER seen any belkin, smc, or other brand fail. And I service MANY home users and small businesses that use these kinds of routers, so I see a lot of them.

Which DSL provider do you have and what modem? If your DSL uses DHCP, your router will work fine on default settings. If not, you may have to configure a little bit more.

If you have a different computer (a laptop or one does NOT have any software from your DSL provider installed) and you plug your DSL modem into the Ethernet port, does it work? If so, it will also work with your router.

DSL connects directly to the router where as a cable modem is a seperate piece of equipment that you must run a cat5 cable from to the router then to your pc. If your doing this then follow the steps above and run ipconfig in coomand prompt to be sure you are connecting to your router. you may need to call tech support to walk you through your model router.

you need to make sure if the setting for your Linksys is set to DHCP. but there are also other dsl modems that requires you to bridge the dsl modem and set your Linksys to PPPOE. you need to verify also if your dsl modem is set as PPPOE or DHCP. i would suggest call your ISP regarding your dsl modem settings.

depending on the dsl provider, you might need to use pppoe, which also requires a login and a password.
