I have been building systems for myself and friends for several years. I have built good systems for around $1500 and very high end systems for as much as $6000.
Right now, depending upon what you want your system to do, a $300 motherboard coupled with a Core 2 Duo processor and dual ATI Crossfire video cards, and at least 4 GB of memory would be a nice machine.
I could build this system including case, power supply and dual 320 GB hard drives for around $3400. Software is extra.

To build on from the ground up including a nice monitor you will need about $1,500. That's the price for almost top of the line. Paying for the fastest components only gets you maybe 5-10% faster performance for twice the cost.
When buying, read tons of reviews (http://www.tomshardware.com is really good and very reputable) and buy a few steps back from top of the line.

good site to visit to get an accurate estimate of how much you'd be looking at is www.ncix.com theres also a custom build feature on the site so you can build and price right away...
But being a computer geek i'd say 6,000 not including taxes

I would not suggest building it yourself, but if you are so intent on building it: at least $1,000
