Recently I think I've dried out my skin to the point where it has started overcompensating and producing *more* oil. Now I'm trying to figure out exactly *which* thing has caused this to happen. (Too much cleansing? Too many oil-blotting sheets? Too much exfoliation? All of the above?). Basically what I want to understand is, How does skin "know" or "detect" that has been dried out to the point where it needs to produce more sebum? Does this have to involve washing or scrubbing? Or is it simply the absence of oil on the surface of the skin (like from using oil blotting sheets, or applying powder too frequently throughout the day)?
If actual washing or scrubbing is required for this change in oil production, then I won't worry about my fairly frequent use of blotting sheets and powder applications (every 2-4 hours). If the skin can "detect" a need to produce more oil from merely blotting & powdering, then I don't know what to do!
Thanks, & I hope this question makes sense...

Oh -- I should've said that I wash twice a day (at the VERY most, but this is rare, three times). Most of the concern is about the blotting & powdering. I'm pretty much asking, if the washing & exfolation are done in good amounts, can over-blotting & over-powdering, alone, trigger the changes?

There actually is such a thing as scrubbing too hard and cleansing to much. It is imprtant to keep skin clean yes, but too much of it can cause damage to the skin. If your skin has become oily, then just wash your face with a cleanser at least two times a day and make sure to put lotion on it anyway. Use oil-blotting sheets, They don't do anything. They simply absorb oil, and they don't scratch or destroy skin cells. Exfoliating should be kept in moderation because it can rip off lots of skin, including live layers of skin, which then causes the skin to produce more oil. It doesn't know or detect, it reacts. Just like red bloods cells turning into strings to create a clot when a cut happens. Your skin reacts to the "dryness" and puts its oil production into overdrive.
Just don't overscrub, over-cleanse or over-exfoliate.
Moisturize and don't take all the oil out of your face, it's only an excess that causes problems. Oily complexions have less wrinkles later on in life. Hope this helps.

Too much of anything is not a good thing. You should try a cleanser that is soft and not too harsh on your skin. Try switching it up, use a cleanser for oily skin at night, after a long day. Then in the morning use a mild cleanser/sensitive skin, since your face didn't get "dirty" during the night.
Hormonal changes may cause your skin to be different also, especially around your monthly cycle. You may also want to look into using a clay face mask 2-3 times a week at most.
Most importantly, don't be too harsh on your skin because it will only reacts to how you treat it. Try to keep your pores clean and don't scrub too hard. It should very gently. Cut back on the foundation/ make up. Look for a light mostisurizer or Matte one that asorbs quickly and with SPF of at least 15.
GOOD LUCK! :)
It will get better, if not try seeing a dermatologist. Keep in mind, if you are a teenager, it's NORMAL. We all have been through it. :) Your hormones are raging, it will find it's balance. Maintain a balance diet and drink lots of water.

Over blotting and powdering won't cause this. It could actually be hormonal fluctuations. It could also be the in your makeup. Stay away from anything oil based. Only use scrubs once a week, or you can irritate your skin. Next, try a gentle foaming cleanser that doesn't strip your skin, followed by an alcohol free toner, and then a light weight moisturizer. I'm definitely not a dermatologist, but I'd imagine it's the cleansing, not the powder. It's got to be a "deeper" problem than surface oil. I DO agree though that you skin will overcompensate. I was having problems once that my foundation would get icky quickly, so I laid off the moisturizer and the saleswoman at the makeup counter said that I needed to use MORE moisturizer, not less, so my skin didn't get dry and produce extra oil. makes sense to me!
