A group of 108 people attend a ball game. There were five times as many children as adults in the group. Write a system of equations that could use to set up this problem, where a is the number of adults and c is the number of children in the group.

I need help making the equations!!!!

Just don't panic. Think about it. The number of adults (a) and children (c) is (=) 108. Right?

a + c = 108

and, there are five times as many children (c) as adults (a).

So c = 5 times a

c = 5a.

No Problem! You know that the total number of people is 108. So just set up your variables. The number of childern is 5 x's more than the number of adults, so let adults = a and childern = c. However, childern equal 5 x's the number of adults so, childern actuall equall 5a.

Now your equation is:

5a + a = 108
-combine the a's
6a=108
- divide by 6 to get "a" alone
a=18
- Thus, adults (a) = 18 and childern(c or 5a) = 90

You know that 108 people attended the game, so a + c = 108. You also know that there are five times as many children as adults, so c = 5a. That is your system. When you substitute for c in the first equation, the solution is basic algebra.

108 = c + a. If c = 5a (children is 5 time of adult) then
108 = 5a + a (replacing c for a here!!)
108 = 6a;
so a = 108/6 which is 18 (i.e 18 adults)

If we go back to the top equation
108 = c + a
c = 108 - a (re-arranging equation)
so c = 108 - 18 which 90 (i.e 90 children).
90 is also 5 times of 18. Bingo!!

Hope this help!

108 people total means a+c=108.

five times as many children as adults means c=5a.

First you divide 108 people by 6. Then you get 18. In the end you get 18 adults and 90 children.
