I planted a young flowering crab apple tree about a month ago and although it seems to be generally happy, I have just noticed that its trunk has developed a powdery green covering and also, there are a few holes in the leaves. Is this ok and should I treat it with anything?

The green trunk is probably moss. As with many new plantings we water those plants quite a bit. If alot of water is getting onto the trunk, moss can develop. It isn't going to be harmful, but it might be an indicator that the plant could be overwatered. Moss also tends to develop on trees that are in shady spots. Crab apples like sunny locations (they may adapt to shady spots).

The holes in the leaves aren't to be worried about now. Fall is at hand, and the leaves will be coming off. Watch for problems in late spring and summer, bring samples of those problems to your local independent garden center for diagnosis. This time of year it can be anything, old damage, wind damage, storm damage.

In the spring begin fertilizing the tree. Follow the directions on your label. I'd recommend ESPOMA 'hollytone'. There are a lot of good fertilizers out there.

I hope that this helps
Good luck-

it is fall the leaves will fall off soon - and do not worry about the trunk of the tree - many trees have that.

It's probably algae that is growing on it. It's harmless to the plant.

Another possibility is the nursery sprayed it with fert. (or less likely fungicide) and that color may be becoming visible as you water it or it gets rained on. Algae most likely.

Because it's aware of environmental issues?
