That is a good question. Certainly Martin Luther King Junior was an excellent orator and as a speech that has to be one of the better ones for content and for the theme advocating equality among all people. If however one contrasts it to literary masterpieces or works of philosophy that espouse ethics and virtue it might seem a little flat. However, when he addressed the multitudes on television in a crowd of people on the White House it gave new emphasis to law makers that segregation was a thing of the past and would no longer be tolerated.

without re-reading his speech for your question, i'm going to tell you what made his speech memorable to me...
i can't read the words "I HAVE A DREAM" without the echo of hearing those very words in Dr. King's voice... his speech was mighty and firm like a lion, but softly spoken like a lamb. In the 60's, the world was changing in so many ways industrially, economically, socially... the black race had endured so much hardship for so long, kept from basic human rights, freedom, opinion, lands, jobs and so much more... it was necessary to stand up and stop the great divide of the wonderful opportunities that lie ahead. Dr. King painted a bright and directionful, hope-filled future, one of love and happiness and reward and equality for people of color - and he included all colors. Martin Luther King was a great great man.

1. The historical moment when the White House recognized him publicly
2. The enormous audience he had through the media
3. The circumstances, people were prepared to listen at this point
4. In his 'I have a dream...he painted a picture in vivid colours of what America could be like, and the listeners couldn't help but think this is the way America could be like, the way it was supposed to be.
May his dream be totally fulfilled one day soon!
