My guess is the Grand Prix owner is the victim of a shyster, or the owner of a previously abused vehicle. Either way, that experience is not typical.
The Grand Am is a nice overall car. We put 67,000 miles on our '02 GT with almost no trouble at all. I say almost because I don't remember anything going wrong, and I figure there must be something I'm forgetting.
Good power with the V6, and pretty good mileage. A bit underpowered with the 4 cylinder for me, but probably perfect for my novice kid. Wheel bearings do go bad, but not at the epidemic rates suggested earlier.
Overall, if you get one that hasn't been too abused, you should have a car you can run up to 150K with minimal trouble.

I owned a 2000 model the car itself was a good car fuel mileage 19 to 20 mpg with v6 and auto tranny. But the power was great the car handled very well.I had 123000 on it when I handed it over to my brother,HE drove it another 60000 miles and it still ran well.I would say that if it has been taken care of that it would be a OK car.The only problem I ever had was the alternator but at 97000 miles that's pretty common. I would guess the four cylinder version is under powered they are a pretty heavy car!

I'm not all that farmiliar with the Grand Am, but I do have a 2001 Grand Prix, and it is the biggest pile of **** you have ever seen. It's nice and shiny and pretty, but I have had it for less than a year and besides the car payments themselves, I have had to put over six thousand dollars into it. The guy at the shop told me that all Pontiacs have crappy transmissions, which I had to get rebuilt for two thousand dollars, and alot of Pontiacs have crappy injector systems, which I also had to replace, among many other things.

The pros are it's a good looking good handling car and with the v6 a pretty peppy car. The cons are wheel bearings tend to need replaced frequently and on the 3.1 v6 intake gaskets blow out and they have a higher rate of electrical problems.

i have a 01 grand am, and have had it for 2 years in december. its been a great car, no problems at all. the only problem you will run into is the manifold gasket goes bad after about 75k miles on the 3.4l. other then that comman problem, its a great car.
